Overview

The Water Resources Center (WRC) was established by the Texas Tech University Board of Regents in 1965. Since its inception, the WRC has encouraged, conducted, and coordinated water resources research and related activities. To accomplish this purpose, WRC has adopted a multiphase approach, encompassing research, education, and public service.

The WRC's research activities focus on current water issues of regional importance to the Texas High Plains and encompass state, national, and international water issues that are of common concern.

The operating philosophy of the WRC is that the highest priority for research activities should be accorded to concerns inherent in ensuring the High Plains region has water supplies that are adequate in quantity and quality to meet the region's needs.

Thus, three objectives have been identifies: 1) Augmentation - increasing the supply of available water; 2) Conservation - reducing demands by increasing the efficiency of water use; 3) Protection - preventing the pollution of existing supplies.

Education and the WRC go hand-in-hand. The WRC is housed in the Civil Engineering Department of Texas Tech University, with its primary researchers being faculty in Civil Engineering or Environmental Engineering. The WRC provides extremely valuable services in the form of undergraduate and graduate student support, thesis dissertation topics, and training in research methodology.

Each year student in several departments of the university are supported through activities of the WRC. The opportunities afforded these graduate and undergraduate students for participating in finding solutions to real problems are an indispensable part of the education process.

The WRC also provides public services, both locally and statewide, through its publications, seminars, workshops, this website, and as a resources contact with access to water-related experts throughout the campus.

The success of our program can be attested to in part by increasing demands for students who have contributed to the WRC's research efforts. Additionally, the WRC has gained a national reputation because of the research and educational programs it has conducted.
